Reaching Up to the Sky
III
September, 2002 cotton hand-painted fabric This is the third version of "Reaching Up to the Sky." The first was created for America From the Heart: Quilters Remember September 11, 2001 and was sold at auction. It was published in the book of the same name. The second was commissioned by Susan Rubino of Austin, Texas. The proceeds of that sale were donated to the Yorktown Heights, NY family of a firefighter who lost his life at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. This version was created for "11 de septiembre a traves del Quilt" in Costa Rica. It also toured with "Quilters Against Terrorism" a collection of English, Canadian, French and American quilts artists. It is currently available for purchase. As with the 2nd quilt in the series, the proceeds of the sale will be donated to the Yorktown Heights, NY family of a firefighter who lost his life at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Epitaph 800 November, 1997 56" w x 31-1/2" h cotton fabrics. polyester batting machine pieced, machine couched and machine quilted A memorial for the victims of TWA Flight 800, who perished in Long Island Sound. Having spent every summer of my life on the shore of Long Island as a child, the crash of Flight 800 affected me deeply. I felt a connection to the people on that flight . . . My family and I could so easily have been traveling to Paris that day on that flight. Exhibited in 1998 at The Northern Star Quilters' Guild "The Four Elements Challenge", where it was awarded 1st Place and judged "Best Overall." |
